Description
The garden tiger is a nocturnal animal. Its distinctive brown patches with broad white lines should scare predators. The orange hind wings have a number of large black eyes, that are exposed when in danger. This butterfly doesn't have a tongue or other mouthparts which makes it impossible to feed. The caterpillar has a long thick black to gray hairs, on the sides rusty.

Size
Adult specimens have a wingspan up to 70 mm.

Habitat
The garden tiger prefers gardens, parks and open woodlands. Caterpillars feed value of various plants of the family Salix, Rumex and Rubus. Hibernates as caterpillar.

Flight season
From July to September.

Foodplants
Various herbaceous plants such as Urtica sp. (nettle), Rumex sp. (sorrel) and Salix repens (creeping willow).

Distribution
Very widespread, Euopa, Asia and North America.
