Description
The bass is a real predator. It has a streamlined body with a distinctive lateral line. Can be recognized by the two dorsal fins, that almost touch each other. The first dorsal fin has 8 or 9 spiny rays. The operculum usually has a dark patch and is provided with a spine.
In early summer the adults will move to the coastal waters to mate. Juveniles will live in the shallow coastal waters and feed on small fish and molluscs.
Adults hunt in small groups in the open water or near river deltas. The bass can also be found in brackish water.

Size
Up to 1 meter long.

Colour
The back is grey-blue end the belly is white to beige. Juveniles have dark spots over their body.

Habitat
Adults can be found in open water but also in estuaries. Juveniles can be found in shallow sub tidal areas.

Distribution
North Eastern Atlantic from South Norway to West Africa, the Mediterranean and the Black sea.
