Description
The umbrella jellyfish
is a hydromedusae of a hydroid colony (this is the
reproductive stage of a hydroid colony).
Hydroid colonies can reproduce sexually and asexually. During sexual
reproduction male and female medusae are released from special polyps called
gonophores. After some time the medusae produce egg cells and sperm that are
released in the water. After fertilisation planula larva are formed, that will
swim in the water for while. They will attach themselves to the substrate on a
suitable spot, where they will form a new colony. They medusae look like a
jellyfish.
Size
The maximum diameter is 35 mm.
Colour
Usually transparent with white part are the reproductive organs.
Habitat
The hydromedusae swim free in open water.
Distribution
Eastern Pacific and Northern Atlantic.
