Description Size
The two-spot goby is a recently introduced species for the Dutch fauna. The
first specimen was seen in august 2004 en during the summer of 2006 it became
quite common in many locations during the summer of 2006. It is a pelagic
animal, unlike many other gobies that live rather on the bottom. They have a
distinctive black spot at the base of the tail. Males have a second just behind
the pectoral fin.
Length up to 60 mm.
Colour
The base colour is usually reddish-brown and lighter patches on the dorsal side.
The sides show pale blue and dark brown spots and lines.
The black spots are sometimes outlined in yellow. During mating the male
colouration will become very vivid.
Habitat
Shallow coastal waters between algae, usually 1 to 5 meters deep.
Distribution
North Eastern Atlantic from Norway to North West Spain. Records from the Mediterranean and Adriatic still to be confirmed.
