Description
This hawk moth with its striking white active antennas, is especially active at dusk. When in danger it spreads its wings and bends its rear body. The caterpillar may vary in color but rather characteristic are the large spine on the rear body and double rows (black-rimmed) white patches on the side of the body.

Size
Between 50 mm to about 75 mm wingspan. The caterpillars can grow up to 80 mm.

Habitat
Roadsides and other flowery sunny spots. Hibernates in the ground as larva, protected by a cocoon.

Food plants
Plants belonging to the Euphorbia (Spurge) family that are poisonous.

Flight season
From May to July. In warmer climates, a second brood flies in August - September.

Distribution
This hawk moth occurs in south and central Europe. In the North, it can be seen as a migration moth.
