Description
Chitons are also called 'coat-of-mail shells' due to the resemblance of the
armour of ancient knights. It has a hard shell composed of eight interlocking
arched plates. It lives on top and underneath stones. They are herbivores and
graze on encrusting algae with there specialy developed tongue (radula).
Size
The maximum length is 23 mm.
Colour
Green, grey to reddish brown.
Habitat
Chitons live in the tidal zone and shallow coastal waters.
Distribution
North eastern Atlantic including the Mediterranean.
