Description
In the northern part of Europe there is only one brood per year, in the southern part there are two. This little butterfly is distinguished by the many white spots on the wings. The bottom wing is usually a conspicuous white patch with a typical large triangular incision. Sometimes specimens are found with very different pattern, called Taras. The larva lives in a tube made of rolled leaves of the foodplant. Hibernates as pupa. The top of the wings is dark brown with distinct white spots. The wing edges are lined with a row of small white to pale gray spots. The underside of the wings are light brown with white spots. The caterpillar is greenish yellow with a dark head. The top of the wings is dark brown with distinct white spots. The wing edges are lined with a row of small white to pale gray spots.

Size
The wingspan to 23 mm. The mature caterpillar has a length of about 20 mm.

Habitat
Prefers dry and damp places, sandy, arid grassy areas, roadsides, wooded areas and areas with rich flowery vegetation.

Foodplants
Several plants like Potentilla reptans (Creeping Cinquefoil), Potentilla anserina (Common Silverweed), Fragaria vesca (woodland strawberry), Potentilla palustris (Purple Marshlocks).

Flight season
From early May to July when a fly generations, a second brood from July until August.

Distribution
In most of Europe, except the extreme north.
